PRELIMINARY COMPETITION FORMAT & DRAW PROCEDURES
ROUND ONE
The 16 lowest-ranked PMAs (based on the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ Preliminary Competition and
Final Competition results) will contest Round One.
The 16 teams will be paired into eight home-and-away series
The matches are scheduled to be played in the period between 29 June and 3 July 2011.
The eight winners of each series advance to Round Two.

ROUND TWO
The eight Round One series winners will then join the 22 next, highest-ranked PMAs (based on the
2010 FIFA World Cup™ Preliminary Competition and Final Competition results) in Round Two.
The 30 teams will be paired into 15 home-and-away series.
The matches are scheduled to be played in the period 23-28 July 2011.
The 15 winners of each series advance to Round Three.

ROUND THREE
In Round Three, the 15 Round Two series winners will then join the remaining five PMAs that
received a bye in Round Two.
The 20 teams will be drawn into five round-robin, home-and-away groups of four teams each.
The matches are foreseen to take place in the period 2 September 2011 to 29 February 2012.
The five group winners and five group runners-up advance to Round Four.
ALLOCATION TO POTS:
The 20 Round Three teams will be allocated to four pots of five teams based on the FIFA/Coca-Cola
World Ranking of July 2011. The top five teams will be placed in Pot 1; the next 5 best teams will be
placed in Pot 2; and so on.
DRAW PROCEDURE:
The teams will be drawn into five groups of four teams for Round Three.
The teams in Pot 4 are placed in position 4 of each group; the teams in Pot 3 in position 3; the
teams from Pot 2 in position 2; and the teams from Pot 1 in position 1.
The draw starts with Pot 4 and ends with Pot 1.
Groups are filled starting with Group A and ending with Group E.

ROUND FOUR
The five Round Three group winners and five group runners-up will contest Round Four.
The ten teams will be drawn into two round-robin, home-and-away groups of five teams each.
The matches are foreseen to take place between 3 June 2012 and 18 June 2013.
The third-placed teams of each group advance to Round Five.
The two group winners and two group runners-up qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup™.
DRAW PROCEDURE:
The draw date, location and procedure for Round Four will be confirmed by the end of Round Three
by the Organising Committee for the 2014 FIFA World Cup BrazilTM.

ROUND FIVE – “CONTINENTAL PLAY-OFF”
The two third-placed teams from the two Round Four groups will contest Round Five.
The teams will play one home-and-away play-off series.
The matches are foreseen to be played in the period from 6-10 September 2013.
The Round Five winner advances to the intercontinental play-off.
DRAW PROCEDURE:
The draw date, location and procedure for Round Five will be confirmed by the end of Round Four

by the Organising Committee for the 2014 FIFA World Cup BrazilTM.
